Thomas Edward Sorrells Sr.

–

Lewes, Delaware

Thomas Edward Sorrells Sr. was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Jessie Kate Sorrells and Candler Sorrells on August 3, 1938. He departed this life on July 5, 2025.

Thomas was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he graduated from Howard high school in 1956. After high school he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Jean Sampson. They had six children, three boys and three girls Thomas E. Sorrells Jr., Michael L. Sorrells, Dianna L. Turner, Anthony Sorrells, Jacqueline Sorrells and Donna M. Sorrells.

He proudly served his country for two decades as a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army. He spent three years in Germany with his family. He was also stationed in Ft. Belvoir Virginia, and Thailand. While in Thailand he had suits made with his name embroidered in them. He brought back clothes for all of us. He also had furniture shipped back to the United States. Thomas spent the rest of duty in New Jersey and retired from the military in 1978 as an E7 master sergeant. He spent the rest of his working years at General Motors, retiring at the age of 55.

All of his friends called him Jack. Jack and Barbara shared a remarkable zest for life, marked by their adventurous spirit and travels to every state in America. They truly never let the grass grow under their feet. Jack became a man of God in his early years. In New Jersey Jack and Barbara were devout members of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Burlington NJ. When they moved to Delaware, they became members of St. John Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Annie Jane Custis in Millsboro, Delaware.

Jack leaves behind his oldest daughter, Dianna and her husband Robert, Son, Anthony and his wife Carla, daughter, Jacqueline and daughter, Donna. Two sister-in laws, Remell Sorrells and Mildred Johnson. Six Grandchildren, Anthony G. Sorrells Jr., Lauren Myers, Eric Turner, Brittany Heath, Joequetta Sorrells, Gregory Sorrells and seven great grandchildren. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, special cousins Hoyt and Mary Sorrells and many other relatives.

We, the family of Thomas Sorrells Sr., are grateful for each, and every expression of love and concern extended to us during this bereavement. We would like to give a very special thanks to Meals on Wheels, his whole team of doctors, family members, friends and other thoughtful deeds. It is our earnest and sincere prayer that all of God’s blessings will be showered upon you in unlimited and abundant measures.
