Paul D. Purnell Sr.

–

Townsend, Delaware

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. (Psalm 27:23)

Paul D. Purnell Sr., affectionately known as “Uncle PDP” by many, was born on January 19, 1960, in Milford, Delaware. Paul possessed a charismatic personality that was infectious and a thoughtful spirit that knew no bounds. He was a man of faith who allowed God to use his gifts and talents to touch the lives of others. Paul lived life to the fullest, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, faith, and cherished memories. On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Paul peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord.

Early Life and Education
Paul received his early education through the Woodbridge School District and later returned to earn his GED through the James H. Groves Adult High School program. His strong work ethic began on the farm of T.S. Smith & Sons, where he worked diligently and operated various types of farm equipment.

In his early twenties, Paul moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he began working for Speakman Plumbing and Manufacturing. In 1988, he earned his journeyman license through Delcastle Technical High School, further developing his skills and advancing his career in the plumbing and pipe-fitting trade.

Throughout his professional life, Paul held several positions, including Assistant to the Chief Engineer and House Plumber and Pipe Fitter at the historic Hotel duPont. He also worked as a truck driver for NFI Logistics and was recognized for his work as a motorbus driver with Delaware Express. Through his many years of hard work, Paul demonstrated dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to take on new challenges.

His Faith and Love of Music
Paul's passion for life was reflected in his many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding motorcycles, embracing the freedom and excitement each brought him. Yet music held a particularly special place in his heart.

Paul began his drumming journey at The First Church of Deliverance in Laurel, Delaware, where his musical gifts first began to flourish. He continued to develop his talent at Refuge Temple Deliverance Church in Wilmington, Delaware. Music was more than a hobby for Paul; it was another way he expressed his faith, shared his gifts, and connected with others.

His commitment to serving God extended beyond music. Paul faithfully served as a deacon at Church on the Rock Ministry, Inc., in New Castle, Delaware. Through his faith and service, he sought to be a blessing to those around him.

A Love Called “Sweetness”
On November 22, 2008, Paul married the love of his life, Christine DeVose Purnell, affectionately known to him as “Sweetness.” Their love was warm, affectionate, and unmistakable. They cherished the simple yet meaningful moments of life together, holding hands, sharing kisses, and finding happiness in one another's company.

Their relationship was a beautiful reminder that love is found not only in grand gestures but also in the everyday moments that bring two hearts closer together. Paul and Christine shared a special bond, one filled with affection, companionship, and treasured memories that Christine will carry in her heart forever.

His Greatest Blessing: Family
Above all his accomplishments and interests, family was what mattered most to Paul. He was a loving and supportive husband, a devoted father, and a cherished member of his family. His love for Christine, his children, and those closest to him was an important part of who he was.

Paul shared a special bond with his brother Michael (considered his “Irish Twin) and their nephew Raymond. More than relatives, they were brothers at heart and the best of friends, creating memories and a bond that will forever be treasured. Paul also shared a special bond with both his niece Tiphane’ and nephew Michael, to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle PDP,” - to them Paul was more than an uncle. Living nearby throughout their childhood, he became a constant presence in their lives and a second Dad.

Paul's presence brought joy to those around him. His warmth, generosity, and unmistakable personality made an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Whether through a shared laugh, a word of encouragement, his music, or simply the gift of his presence, Paul had a way of making people feel connected.
His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
