Ellen Diane Washam
August 7, 1947 – May 7, 2025
Ellen Diane Washam was born on August 7, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Thomas and Bertha Mae Holloman. On May 7, 2025, on what would have been her 42nd wedding anniversary, she reunited with her beloved husband, Ben Washam, in eternal peace. After a brave and dignified battle, the Lord called her home.

From a young age, Ellen was known for her fierce spirit and loving heart. She was an avid reader, a quiet observer of the world, and a fierce defender of her siblings. She was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and later attended Cheyney University, the nation’s oldest historically Black college, where she nurtured her love for learning and service. That protective
nature and passion for education never left her. She spent much of her adult life pouring that same love and dedication into her role as a Teacher’s Aide for children with special needs in the Spartanburg School District, a job that suited her compassionate soul perfectly.

In 1983, Ellen married the love of her life, Ben Washam, in Philadelphia, PA. He affectionately called her “Cubzy”; a name that captured the sweetness of their bond. Together, they built a life full of love, adventure, and purpose. The two were true partners in every sense: in marriage, in business, and in spirit. From running "Ben’s Safety Shoes" to embarking on homebuilding projects, they supported each other through every new venture.

Their love carried them across the world. Ellen and Ben once called Germany, and later, Guam, home, embracing each chapter of life with openness and curiosity. From sipping cappuccinos in Parisian cafés to standing in awe before the ruins of Machu Picchu, Ellen approached every journey with wonder and joy. She walked the cobbled streets of England, danced on the beaches of the Dominican Republic, and soaked in the vibrant colors of Mexico’s markets. For Ellen, travel wasn’t just about seeing the world, it was about experiencing it fully, with the people she loved most.

A woman of deep faith, Ellen devoted herself to God and the church from a young age. Her belief in love, kindness, and strength guided the way she lived and the way she gave of herself to others.

Ellen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ben Washam; her brother, Donald Holloman; and her grandson, Brian Lawhon II.

She leaves behind her sons, Anthony and Brian Lawhon; her siblings, Thomas Holloman, Jr. (Brenda), Bertha Wallace, Janice Lyons, Dennis Holloman (Agnes), Donna Graves (Kim), and Renee McLendon; one grandchild, Isaiah; three great-grandchildren, Ayanna, Moe, and Ethan; one great-great grandchild, Asaela Mae; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Ellen’s legacy is one of quiet strength, boundless love, and a heart big enough to hold the world. She will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
