Queens, New York
Derek Lavon Golson socially known as "Dog", was born on February 5, 1980, to Ralph Golson and Lovie Thompson. Derek attended P.S. 123 and P.S. 37 in Jamaica, Queens, where he began making his mark from an early age. Even as a young child, Derek had a personality that could not be missed. His mother fondly remembers one particular snowstorm when she received a call from the school, only to learn that Derek had left the building and was outside in the schoolyard playing in the snow. That moment was a small glimpse of the spirited, fearless, and unforgettable personality that would follow him throughout his life.
After P.S. 37, Derek went on to attend J.H.S. 210 and later, Springfield High School as well as Queens Vocational Highschool, continuing to grow and make memories that would remain with those who knew and loved him.
All who knew Derek knew that he was the life of the party. Witty, quick with his words, and always ready to make someone laugh, Derek had a way of bringing joy wherever he went. He had an infectious energy and warmth that naturally drew people close to him. His laughter, humor, and unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know and love him.
Three things Derek undeniably loved were being a father, his family, and his block. He cherished taking trips and spending time with his son, hanging out with his little brothers, Face Timing his little sister, teasing his nieces and nephews, and, of course, vicariously teaching them a lesson or two along the way. Family was never something Derek took for granted. He found joy in the little moments, the laughter, the conversations, and simply being around the people he loved. And then there was 116. Derek proudly and jokingly referred to himself as the “Mayor” of 116. He knew everybody, had something to say about everything, and somehow always managed to make his presence known. His love for his family and his neighborhood was a part of who he was. That was Derek. He was a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and the self-proclaimed Mayor of 116. He loved hard, laughed loudly, and left his mark on the people and places that meant the most to him.
Derek was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Adeline Thompson and Winford Thompson, Sr; his paternal grandparents, Lena Golson and Sidney Golson Sr.; his father, Ralph Golson; and his two brothers, Roderick Baldwin and Anthony McDougald.
He is lovingly remembered by his son, Derek “DJ” Golson Jr; his mother, Lovie Thompson; his siblings, Jason Golson (Melba), Justin Golson, and Kelly Golson; his nephews, Jason Golson Jr. and Kairo Golson; his nieces, Jakira Golson and Janylah Golson; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
